week 655 ~ the world of tattoos and a pickup truck
the world of tattoos and a pickup truck
American dreams now riddled with rust
someone’s utopia sneer if you must
but where you grew up’s a product of luck
and what you believe shows whose words you read
we all still have parents and families
children we want to be happy one breeze
can knock us into a new path so heed
the little voice of doubt look through someone
else’s glasses squinting into the sun
being kind’s the best choice in the long run
perhaps there’s common ground before you’re done
look truth in the eye our land of the free
demands we all deserve equality
week 599 ~ If I may ask a question of the world
If I may ask a question of the world
how much can we all take collectively
how many deaths will be too many we
must reach a breaking point somewhere fate hurled
insurmountable disease time unfurled
weaknesses in our defenses to see
the underpinnings of society
fail abjectly unprotected souls curled
up into balls of fear when there are no
answers yes we can be distracted by
tv shows and graphs of statistics so
flimsily grasping the silent reply
of numbers of projections we can’t go
on until some truth unseats the big lie
week 551 ~ a small fragment of hope though unbidden
a small fragment of hope though unbidden
lingers near the corner of my vision
not leading forward for truth still hidden
paints a future unknown how can I shun
the light imaginary though it may
be at this moment still waiting to shine
to illuminate the dream that won’t say
its name not yet the one that could be mine
or could remain stillborn in this climate
of uncertain weather harsh refusals
pound like driving rain I try to time it
to break for the door but life bamboozles
me at every turn flaunting its disguise
I teeter perplexed wishing to be wise
week 521 ~ blocked in a box no song to sing
blocked in a box no song to sing
the light switch won’t work we regard
the darkness around us too hard
to hope for morning we’re waiting
for our time anticipating
there will be a way out ahead
a door to truth but here instead
glib promises what can be done
to turn the tide a task begun
our future still mired in dread
week 461 ~ there is no clear path ahead
there is no clear path ahead
just closed doors open windows
could we but see where truth led
nothing carved in stone instead
hasty cyphers scrawled it shows
there is no clear path ahead
and where could reason have fled
critics strike a somber pose
could we but see where truth led
the future arrives with dread
hanging on lost in the throes
there is no clear path ahead
I trip lose hold of the thread
facts shift dreams superimpose
could we but see where truth led
now lies so easily spread
make order hard to impose
there is no clear path ahead
could we but see where truth led
week 437~ a refugee from nevermore
a refugee from nevermore
I need a place to hide away
when there is nothing left to say
when no one’s asking what it’s for
truth hid and someone locked the door
there where we once had hope could trust
before disaster now the dust
settles we hardly look up from
our trouble so much still could come
we move ahead because we must
week 434 ~ the conscience of America
the conscience of America
has put on its shoes it’s marching
in cities big and small watching
events become barbaric a
travesty of justice kick the
lion prod the bully stand strong
in the face of everything wrong
it’s our country land of the free
so defend truth with bravery
to make this a place we belong
