1.15.15As we run down the days toward our departure there still remain some items undone on our to-do list. One of them is visiting our local entry on the list of New 7 Wonders of the World. Cristo Redemptor has been glimpsed from afar in previous photos, as he looks down on the city from every direction, and today we go to visit the huge statue up close. We are lucky on the way up– taxi-to-mini-bus with no waiting. We spiral up through the Tijuica forest for about 10 miles and arrive at the stairs up to our destination. The sun is out, the sky is blue, we take many pictures of the vistas spread 1.15a.15out beneath our lofty perch. But our luck runs thin as we try to leave. About 15 minutes into our wait in line for a return van, word arrives that a large truck has crashed on the winding road up to Cristo, and no vans can get up or down. We can be readmitted to the monument, or wait in line. As more and more people continue to arrive (coming from a hotel mid-way up, higher than the accident, where a couple of hundred people wait for a shorter van ride, having driven or taken a taxi to that point), we opt to wait. And so we find ourselves at noon, in the blazing sun, on the one day I 1.15b.15have forgotten sunscreen. A la… We do get down, taking this photo of a tree in the square as we leave the mini-bus. We eat lunch and swing by the Edison Folk Museum, as it is nearby. Unfortunately all parts of the museum are closed right now– the main museum still from the flooding a few years ago, the small hall between exhibitions– though there is a little exhibit in the shop. So here is a bit of wonderful whimsy to end today’s post. Click on the photo so you can see it larger in glorious detail. Purchasing sunburn cream and dinner at the Garota da Urca complete the day.
