7.14.16This year we lost Chris Guida– the mandolinist who got me to Lubec in the first place and who enthusiastically embraced Mandolin Week and all its disparate students every year, housing some, dragging new ones in, feeding us all– a musician, raconteur, sheep farmer and bread baker par exellence. He was the reason I decided to come back to Lubec even when my colleagues gave it up, because I Chriscouldn’t disappoint Chris. But he died over the winter. He loved to get folks together to play music for hours, although he hated to actually perform, so I decided to organize a sight-reading evening in his memory this year. His wife and some of his local music friends came, and many students and teachers at SummerKeys, some who knew him, some who didn’t. And we played, and laughed, and cried, and told stories, and the evening just felt right. His wife said she kept expecting to look up and see him in the midst of the swirl of activity. And his spirit and enthusiasm certainly were somehow there within us all. We will miss him, and will always appreciate his joyful igniting spark.
