week 500 ~ old lady trees in their youthful dresses

with 2 comments

old lady trees in their youthful dresses
pink and fluttery you can almost hear
them laughing at their brief finery as
errant blossoms blown loose scatter clear
the fences float high on a lazy breeze
before falling to carpet the sidewalk
once a year lovely we wait for the trees
to convince us that warmth is more than talk
that the exploding newness of color
has grabbed momentum that seasons have turned
pulling us outdoors where new life will stir
pushing forth green shoots whose names we’ve not learned
yet beyond the fierce cold of winter past
we stand taller breathe freer spring at last

week 498 ~ when the end is reached how are you to know

with 2 comments

when the end is reached how are you to know
that the obstacles are too great to move
ahead when do you finally admit you’ve
played your last card there’s nowhere left to go
how do you pack up heartbreak in a box
set it on a shelf walk into the arms
of disappointment once again alarms
sound but you carefully reset the locks
on the door of who you are so no one
can get past life’s once-breached defense system
no matter what intrigue accompanies them
your days of living dangerously are done
wrap self-pity in its cloak of darkness
walk away drop a match and torch the mess

week 484 ~ our words emerge and quickly disappear

with one comment

our words emerge and quickly disappear
into the realm of things forgotten now
like love or a shared history while here
we continue to try not knowing how
this will end reaching for what we can’t see
communication some impossible
intersection of our lives now as we
navigate the impossible maze full
of memories long extinguished how far
can we proceed until there is nowhere
left to go ‘til the journey’s too bizarre
to contemplate because there’s no there there
as you slip away as your wandering mind
unties the stretched-thin cords that used to bind

week 479 ~ there is a clear beauty in solitude

with one comment

there is a clear beauty in solitude
moonlight on snow seen through an open door
tonight discovers it needs nothing more
than this peacefully quiet interlude
outside lies a world blanketed in white
muffling sounds holding them close to their source
no one breaks the shaken globe to enforce
schedule idly basking in fading light
pull poetry from dross hum unwritten
tunes give some lost good ideas room to strike
or do nothing if that’s what now feels like
the point is not how much can be stuffed in
reflection allows your compass to find
its own true north and perhaps peace of mind

week 469 ~ perhaps I have been misreading the signs

with 2 comments

perhaps I have been misreading the signs
moving too hastily to conclusions
based on circumstances facts anyone’s
guess this mess of misdirection combines
paranoia and anger in a froth
of unknown duration much like whipped cream
that only lasts so long or a bad dream
or a candle that beckons a drunk moth
I flutter helplessly hooked soon to be
burned ripped hopes ride the rage out of my mouth
and I so long to hop a nightmare south
away from this truth or controversy
don’t think don’t talk but remember to breathe
you’ll ride out love’s storm like any disease

week 464 ~ as if the Mona Lisa came alive

with 2 comments

as if the Mona Lisa came alive
and politely asked for a martini
straight up explaining breathlessly no jive
it’s hard outrunning the paparazzi
extra olives and light on the vermouth
she settles in and tells tall tales about
da Vinci and the joys of misspent youth
you better pay attention or she’ll pout
but as you start to ask a question she
looks up perturbed and says it’s time to go
she still has an important date to keep
and you’re left wondering what that could be
poised on the edge of a dream who can know
what goes on beyond the borders of sleep

week 443 ~ it enters through the backdoor of my mind

with 2 comments

it enters through the backdoor of my mind
music sneaking in plans to occupy
falling out of its pocket no use try
-ing to pretend it won’t win even blind
men see its power pushing me ahead
on a path I can’t help but follow though
it seems to lead where no one sane would go
I press on relentlessly nearly dead
on my feet who knows the reason for my
obsession with this quest perfection won’t
ever be mine but regardless I don’t
stop to read the reasons I shouldn’t try
for love and hope promise to purge my sins
completely as the melody begins

week 433 ~ no one can sleep through an apostrophe

with 2 comments

me-433no one can sleep through an apostrophe
woke me up scribbled it down pondering
what the dream meant let’s do it inferring
action it’s my responsibility
ownership the women’s march where we’ve drawn
a line in the sand thrown down hope’s gauntlet
they’re lying still but we’ll never forget
the disregarded facts we’ll carry on
fighting for our lives as we want to go
on living them ownership and action
it’s time we’re ready they’ve gone too far done
terrible things but there’s still time to sow
truth’s words like Johnny Appleseed along
our way our revolution’s roots grow strong

week 427~ pragmatically you let go of your dreams

with 2 comments

me-xxpragmatically you let go of your dreams
and hope they will hover somewhere close by
that’s not as impossible as it seems
adversity may teach them how to fly
and you’ll get to visit once in awhile
brush off cobwebs recalculate orbits
or if you have a moment maybe dial
their number listen to the phone ring it’s
hard to hang up but there’s real work to do
life heavy with responsibilities
rides your shoulders and owing others you
keep your head down perhaps the wise man sees
value in patience but don’t wait too long
to grab the wheel and drive your own song

week 420 ~ as I reflect on all that I can see

leave a comment »

me-421as I reflect on all that I can see
knowing there’s so much more invisible
now but poised waiting down the road for me
I toast the kindness of grace my cup full
of life’s bounty as it’s turned out to be
and I wouldn’t trade the incredible
sirens’ song that brought me here finally
to accept time’s gravitational pull
for love desire sorrow even pain
have gifts to share treasures that still remain
as my heart ever vigilant dreams on
tracing the faint line evidently drawn
by music long ago and far away
its mystery anticipating this day
