week 619 ~ as the neighbors too loudly conversing

with 2 comments

as the neighbors too loudly conversing
and leaf blowers sing their songs of autumn
the days grow shorter and time reversing
steps away to make a call just a crumb
of silence a moment is all I seek
to rest my mind stop my ears from hearing
the lies that cause me angst for future’s bleak
warning won’t be drowned out by noise fearing
the worst won’t hold it back looking askance
at time won’t reinstate its old routine
helicopters roaring in the distance
sirens portend chaos sadness unseen
oh to hear nothing but wind through the leaves
a breath of solace as tomorrow grieves

week 602 ~ birds sing build nests lay eggs plan their future

with one comment

birds sing build nests lay eggs plan their future
I hear them wonder what will mine look like
when it gets here this cruel limbo could psych
out the most optimistic oh yeah sure
day by day I’m following the detour
uncharted streets taking me from lifelike
back to life hold my finger in the dike
long enough to keep those I love secure
a sonnet takes control of something set
syllables rhyme scheme with a beginning
and end one forty puffs of words to get
through not that certain about anything
else I tidy up the thoughts I regret
and walk outside the sun’s there and birds sing

week 599 ~ If I may ask a question of the world

with one comment

If I may ask a question of the world
how much can we all take collectively
how many deaths will be too many we
must reach a breaking point somewhere fate hurled
insurmountable disease time unfurled
weaknesses in our defenses to see
the underpinnings of society
fail abjectly unprotected souls curled
up into balls of fear when there are no
answers yes we can be distracted by
tv shows and graphs of statistics so
flimsily grasping the silent reply
of numbers of projections we can’t go
on until some truth unseats the big lie

week 582 ~ once upon a time imagination

with one comment

once upon a time imagination
was enough to right the world but not now
and I ask but no one can tell me how
to back away from this situation
where lies topple logic truth’s vacation
should be done but politicians allow
it to call in sick while they disavow
anything that sounds smart with elation
jeer or yell a falsehood loud enough then
maybe someone will believe it until
they get their way or flee the room those men
hold it to be self-evident we will
be fooled or look the other direction
while they sneak up and bury us in swill

week 575 ~ time always passing as lit from within

with 2 comments

time always passing as lit from within
memories escape from their holding cell
with joy or sorrow hallmarks of life well
and truly lived too many to begin
to spend time while the present rushes in
and then it’s gone with stories yet to tell
I hold fast in the current if I fell
would I pass on too would momentum win
or tied to a life path I can’t let go
in moments of despair because of all
who wouldn’t understand I chose to fall
to rush through the interminably slow
unwinding of years left dreams forgotten
have I the strength to stand back up again

week 551 ~ a small fragment of hope though unbidden

with one comment

a small fragment of hope though unbidden
lingers near the corner of my vision
not leading forward for truth still hidden
paints a future unknown how can I shun
the light imaginary though it may
be at this moment still waiting to shine
to illuminate the dream that won’t say
its name not yet the one that could be mine
or could remain stillborn in this climate
of uncertain weather harsh refusals
pound like driving rain I try to time it
to break for the door but life bamboozles
me at every turn flaunting its disguise
I teeter perplexed wishing to be wise

Week 526 ~ I’m not entirely sure what’s still left

with one comment

I’m not entirely sure what’s still left
ahead traveling this road so many
years the future doesn’t have the same heft
it once did the fact of mortality
casts a long shadow mysteriously
unclear about when the end will arrive
or how predictable or suddenly
gone the simple fact of being alive
no longer to be taken for granted
struggling in these uncertain times to be
fully engaged nurture the seeds planted
years ago or sprouting more recently
to be proud of the life I’ve lived so far
yet watch it go the final door ajar

week 516 ~ single out a moment to remember

with 2 comments

single out a moment to remember
from all the days that passed before you knew
how a sudden rain could douse life’s ember
something to hold onto to get you through
an unexpected smile comprehending
nothing can possibly make time rewind
doors close as long lost adventures ending
knock vainly hoping still oh nevermind
life speeds up at the end without warning
there isn’t time to make a speech of note
play one more song to lure in the morning
night will consume you whole that’s all she wrote
and when it comes where will I be waiting
ticket in hand still anticipating

week 510 ~ a loon takes off flies across the river

with 2 comments

a loon takes off flies across the river
softly behind me I hear your guitar
this feeling of peace won’t last forever
nor can it be moved from where we now are
waves lapping the shore birds calling their mate
I’m cut off from the internet the world
set free from the emotions sorrow hate
envy anger at what the fates have hurled
my way here time stretches out seems to flow
ahead as one unbroken melody
with no place in particular to go
here sitting in the sun serenity
has become an easier place to find
as island breezes soothe my troubled mind

week 509 ~ happiness has put itself in mothballs

leave a comment »

happiness has put itself in mothballs
packed itself away pulled the covers up
over its head ignoring anxious calls
to reemerge shut down stuck in lockup
it sees no future place where it could bloom
dust dry fire ravaged cries of children
who are too sad to believe there’s still room
for it as the future unfolds not when
not if not how every day it searches
hoping to find a place to plant a smile
sorrow flows on unsteady it lurches
ahead invisible forgotten while
devious minds plot a future no one
wants life by money and power undone
