Celebrating a Year

I have been putting this off, but surely you 700+ who get my posts in your mailboxes have noticed that, as I approach the last days of my 13th year of Celebrating, there are long pauses between postings, followed by a flurry of posts dropped on the same day. I am still taking photos almost every day, still thinking about life as it rolls past, more unhappily than not in the past couple of years, still writing poems from time to time. But lately I have also been distracted, happily, by my new book in process, and the music compositions that have taken the top spot in my creative priorities for the past year plus. So I will be winding down my blog on October 16, my birthday, 13 years after I began it in 2008. I’m going to add new material for the rest of September, and then, for October, I’ll post the very first 16 days of my blog in reverse order, to end back where I began. Most of you weren’t with me then, so the material may be new. And for the rest of September I will violate the premise I began with– to always stay right in the moment, in the present– and will be looking back.

A tiny flower coming late to the party, brightens the host of dry stalks, grey seedpods, fallen leaves.

A surprise present from a music friend at rehearsal yesterday. A vintage souvenir, collected by her parents, from the beloved city where, fingers crossed, I may someday play music again.

I love this pattern of shadows, seen on my walk today. The autumn days are getting noticeably shorter, the light has a more horizontal slant. I am at work on formatting my new book– painstaking and frustratingly slow, as I work to gain consistency in the look of music and text. The question of context still evades an answer though– how to place these pieces I have written and love into a logical setting for a reader/player who isn’t me. So I settle for doing the necessary set-up work as I wait for an answer to the important question of why.

Blue skies– so welcome in this autumn of rain and dreary news. I sit in my backyard and soak it up.

Even the bees move slowly today, stumbling across the blossoms, getting the last sweetness of summer. Me too.

week 673 ~ there is no reason here

with 2 comments

there is no reason here
no time to pause to dwell
nothing remains to fear
there is no reason here
the table’s been swept clear
all the dominos fell
there is no reason here
no time to pause to dwell

Today P buries his dad. I am with him and his sons and some friends of his dad from the church and the apartment building where he lived. This death was not unexpected, nor was it sudden. But, still the loss is there to be reconciled. A Catholic mass, a drive to the graveyard and a burial service. P places the ashes in the ground and we solemnly drop flowers. I remember, from my mom’s death, the weight of becoming the matriarch/patriarch of the family. No generation above to serve as a buffer to mortality.

Autumn comes on, with cold winds and rain, with memories and mourning.
