There’s a new poetry site up on the web, d’Verse. Their “Open Link Night” on Tuesday introduced me to a plethora of new writers and readers, and their Friday “Form For All” introduced me to the ancient Rhyme Royal.

“The rhyme royal stanza consists of seven lines, (usually) in iambic pentameter. The rhyme scheme is a-b-a-b-b-c-c. In practice, the stanza can be constructed either as a terza rima and two couplets (a-b-a, b-b, c-c) or a quatrain and a tercet (a-b-a-b, b-c-c).” I was too late to post my first one on their site, where there are a lot of interesting versions, but it was in my brain and needed to be put down, so here it is. And yes, I do break the iambs slightly in line 5, to introduce the jolt into slang. I even gave it a title. Enjoy, and visit d’Verse– you won’t be sorry.

Advice to a Friend

in wishing for a light to lead the way
he gave up courage for a passive role
which left no option other than to stay
condone disintegration of his soul

figure it out man your life won’t be whole
again until you get up off your ass
and challenge what the world has brought to pass
