We escape the confines of my neighborhood to walk by the ocean. It is a warm day for January, but the sun stays cloud-bound. Still, we feel the upswing of mood that looking toward a distant horizon uncluttered by buildings always brings. We are lucky to live in a state with so much shoreline accessible to all. Stopping by a fish market on the way home, we pick up some ready-to-bake dinner, thus deliciously escaping the confines of our own cooking as well.

Light is seeping through as executive orders undo past directives, placing us safely back within the world community. Optimism makes a start at nudging dread aside, but recent history cautions us to hesitate. We must not forget, as we move ahead, how low the bar has been set. Accountability has to come before thoughts of unity can hope to thrive.

week 639 ~ anesthetized we carried on

with 2 comments

anesthetized we carried on
sleep walking through grave disaster
awakened now can we master
the wreckage left behind he’s gone
but can violent words be withdrawn
can peace and hope return at last
and lies that left us once aghast
be rendered mute become harmless
inoculated can we bless
this day of change and heal the past

A muted sunset, as I walk today, relieved that the predicted violence never materialized, in the face of the huge massing of troops called to defend our transfer of power. Hard to call it a peaceful transfer this year, given the violence of two weeks ago, but it was reassuring and hopeful. It seems we may get our country back, and perhaps soon, our pre-pandemic personal freedom.

I exercise my car and myself, heading back to my old neighborhood for a walk in the park by the bay. My car has been stagnant in the driveway and needs a run, and I need a change of scenery. I used to walk here most days and still love to cross the bridge over the highway, and take the stairs and path down the hill to the water. It’s chilly as sunset approaches, but as always, inspiring to take in the long vista out to the sea.

A flood of memories surround me today, on what would have been my mom’s 101st birthday. In the past few days I’ve collected stories about her from my brothers and sister and some of their kids, and put them together with photos from her memorial service, sending it out to family to honor her today. She died at 99, a long life lived with vigor, head of a family of which she was so proud. We remember her with gratitude.

Up early, working on music, the sun through the window, as I look up, brings a smile.

We walk in the historic cemetery nearby, surrounded by angels, feeling in need of their blessings.

The tangle of recent events chokes us as we stretch our hopes ahead. We are vulnerable, fearing we will be called upon to withstand another catastrophe on our way to a longed-for new administration. Wondering if we can; hoping the road ahead is clear.
