week 635 ~ I wish it had not happened in our time

with 2 comments

I wish it had not happened in our time
this pathway isn’t one we’d ever choose
but we are on it regardless of whose
nightmare valley boxed us in we can’t climb
out by sheer will stuck in a pantomime
of the life we were living when our muse
had free reign it does no good to accuse
while mourning hapless souls lost in their prime
so we trudge on and go nowhere staying
safely home as more lost days trickle by
redrawing roadmaps as music playing
evaporates and make us want to cry
out in frustration as patience fraying
releases fading hopes in one long sigh

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo.

Decorations of years past, each holding so many memories, happy, bittersweet. And that is the way with holidays, always.

It’s the solstice today, in a year without my annual Carol Sing, without gatherings and parties. I watch the news of millions flying for Christmas, and fear for the implication for a post-holiday Covid surge. As my state tops the NY Times danger list, I plan our Christmas for two, and line up Zoom calls.

In a burst of holiday spirit, I forage in the attic for a string of lights that works, and send out cards to my music group, and others who I haven’t played with since early March. P arrives with pointsettas and presents from my daughter arrive in the mail. And so I welcome in whatever will pass for Christmas today.

Snow blankets the ground and cold holds us indoors. My daily walk is slippery as ice covers carefully shoveled sidewalks.

My project these recent days– a 1000-piece puzzle, a birthday present from my daughter. I am not good at puzzles, and don’t usually seek them out, but I’m finding this a satisfying pandemic project. I get a little jolt of happiness every time a piece fits. And so I slowly continue on, working out the butterflies, engaged with the process.

week 634 ~ stretch out your arms

with 2 comments

stretch out your arms
and touch the sky
ignore alarms
stretch out your arms
not trying harms
dreams that could fly
stretch out your arms
and touch the sky

So a bit of holiday spirit on my kitchen windowsill occasioned by the handmade felt gnome and tree given to me by my friend E, as we gather for a backyard chat. My presents and cards are in the mail; there’s eggnog in the fridge. So let the holidays begin.
