Celebrating a Year

12-29-16More driving, through hundreds of miles of fields and barns, through Ohio and into Pennsylvania to my brother’s house. We arrive exhausted, but in time to step into his bright and colorful home for food and music and an impromptu gathering of cheerful friends adding more joy and laughter to our holiday pilgrimage. We play his original songs until late, happy to be together, enjoying the improvised strands of notes that tie us together within the threads of passing time. I think I needed this trip for many reasons– a break from the simply usual, an ody12-29a-16ssey of discovery, an exorcism of the uncertainty occasioned by the election in November, ever increasing as the new government takes shape, and a reviving infusion of the simple joy of happy childhoods. As I wrote on my protest sign a few weeks ago, whatever happens in the new year, “I will continue to be free.” Getting in the car for a 3000-mile, almost 2-week adventure with my beloved seems to have been a good way to stamp that thought on the door of the future.

  1. Always good to revive one’s self with familiar faces of friends and family.
