Celebrating a Year

11-8-16The day drags itself out of bed, and tries to catch up with racing time. But as my teaching ends, things should have turned toward fine– off to vote, B over for dinner, celebratory martinis, a lovely dinner. Then there’s a moment when all the air seems sucked from the room, the sudden no-mistake realization that the wrong candidate is going to win. We sit in increasing exhaustion and fear, holding out hope until the early hours of tomorrow, willing fate to turn the table, willing the numbers to be wrong, not able to let go of our anticipated joy of finally being able to say “Madame President,” even as the glimpsed possibility slips through our helpless fingers. Sleep comes hard and is troubled.
