Celebrating a Year

10-23-16There are seldom days, big important days, when everything goes nearly as well as possible, when you are calmly full of joy at each moment as it passes, when little irksome details fade to unimportance, and all is in balance in your own personal universe. This, happily, is one of those days. I am playing my final faculty recital with my longtime colleague Luiz, marking my transition from professor to fulltime musician, writer, composer at the end of this semester. Our program includes originals by us both as well as traditional Brazilian choro to put everything in context. All goes well, the audience is full of friends, students, colleagues, including L who arrives unexpectedly from NYC to help celebrate, and their warm reactions fill the hall with light. Dinner afterwards with many good friends in a favorite restaurant is a lovely finish. I drive home with P and B, exhausted but savoring the afterglow of a wonderful afternoon of music.
