Celebrating a Year

8.24.16Up early, we buy fresh food and ice for our cooler, drive the last leg of the trip, park our car, and hitch a ride across to the island with S, who manages, amazingly, to fit both of us and all our gear into his canoe. The phrase “drowning party” surfaces from a forgotten recess of my mind. Luckily he has a motor to get us through the choppy water and we arrive safely on “my” beach. We set up camp, cook dinner on the open fire, and settle in to watch the sun set. All of us who have a stake in this rustic paradise call it “coming home”. As we sit here listening to the wind in the aspen trees, the waves lapping the shore, the fire crackling, our sense of serenity is palpable, and such a welcome change.

  1. Hmm…sounds a bit of a precarious ride. :-)
