Celebrating a Year

4.5.16Today the Brazilian Studies conference begins at Brown University, and spring comes to the trees on campus. The regular students are on break so parking is easy and the clusters of people I pass fill the air with Portuguese. I present my paper today in the first session, a Thursday. And although sparsely attended, as folks are just arriving, it goes well and I am freed for the rest of the time to listen, to knock my head against new ideas, and to decifer the carefully researched words, often not English, that flow my way.

  1. Ah…this reminded me of a paper I presented on a Sunday morning…after most conference attendees on Saturday had partied all night….needless to say…only a handful of people attended…and two or three were college friends…I feel your pain! :-)
