Celebrating a Year

3.13.16In the morning we visit the Sao Salvador roda, not to play but to listen, buy CDs (some great finds), and drink a caipirinha from the famous stand of Luizinho. Then we head by metro to Ipanema to the Feria de Hippie to buy presents for friends, passing close by the massive demonstrations against the government. The old President Lula, has been arrested for corruption, and the current President Dilma is fighting impeachment. Ai ai ai! The demonstrators resemble soccer fans, with their faces painted green and yellow– the 3.13a.16Brazilian flag colors– some wrapped in flags, some carrying dolls of Lula as a criminal– I snatch a quick picture of one on the metro. Having found some mementos for friends and family we cruise by home to pick up my bandolim, and head to the Chorinho no Forte roda to play with some of the same people from last night, although there are several absences of those who just couldn’t make it two in a row. By the end I am exhausted myself and we staggar home to some welcome rest.

    • As always, it is easier being here than hearing about it. The protests in Rio were peaceful, festive, although it was more serious in Sao Paulo.
