Celebrating a Year

3.12.16We meet R & C & little G for breakfast out on a sunny morning. Then P & I walk to the bus stop to make our way to Saturday Choro school, to see old friends and listen to the bandao– the huge student choro band that performs outdoors at the end of each session. But before a bus arrives the skies open up and we are caught in a sudden torrential deluge, having neglected to bring umbrellas. We wait in the shelter of the bus stop, let the bus pass, the rain lessen, and run back home to fetch umbrellas, but the deluge returns. Not sure what to do, we text, try to figure out what is going on to no avail. Time rolls on and finally it is too late to make it for whatever might have happened. (We find out later that bandao was cancelled because of the rain). But there is still music in our day as Romulo has arranged a roda-party in our honor at his place in the apartment building’s central space. We arrive at 4:00 and play on and on, as more people arrive, and the fury of the storm unleashes again so no one wants to leave until it has eased. There is nothing to do but play choro and drink beer and laugh and chat for hours, finally wading home close to midnight through streets turned into rivers and puddles turned into ponds.

  1. When all else fails…drink beer, play music and have a party. :-)
