Celebrating a Year

2.26.16My son and I drive north to visit Mom. She is moving ever farther from the universe where we once all lived, so every visit entails taking a deep breath and letting go of days past to engage in our remaining present, appreciating whatever happens. Still she shows flashes of comprehension, pointing to a wedding photo of N and his wife and “remembering” that they had visited together, as they had. Life is so unpredictable, so uncertain, held only by memory where the layers can shift and mingle as the brain releases its grasp. We leave for a cheery lunch with my brother and sister-in-law before driving home and N returns to packing for his departure tomorrow.

  1. So good to share those moments together with your mother and son…something to be treasured.
