Today I find out that the brilliant poet, C. D. Wright, died unexpectedly in her sleep two days ago. She was much honored for her writing, was the Poet Laureate of Rhode island, where she lived and taught, and the winner of a MacArthur “genius” award. More than that she was a dear friend to dear friends of mine who are struggling to put this in context. She was a vibrant woman who died just after her 67th birthday, just after her latest book was published. Far too soon. Here’s a link to C. D. Wright reading recently. RIP.

“Poetry is a necessity of life… It is a function of poetry to locate those zones inside us that would be free, and declare them so.” – C. D. Wright
