Celebrating a Year

5.23.15It’s Memorial Day week-end, the unofficial start of summer in much of the USA. Two friends are married this afternoon, outdoors in full sun, though with an uncharacteristically chilly breeze. I am glad for their joy, despite the tarnish on my belief in the institution itself. P’s band is playing in the evening at a block party nearby, so we leave when he gets a call that the opening act has one more song to go, and drive to another celebration of a different sort. I have packed my winter jacket, wool socks, and hat “just in case,” and I am glad of their warmth as the sun sets. Still we celebrate, for even with temperatures that insist on back-sliding periodically we trust we are heading inexorably toward warmer days.
