The day passes in a high-speed blur. But I do get to teach two of my favorite yet disparate areas– the Medieval rondeau song form, and the layered sound of James Brown. I smile as my students write a funny rondeau together and then sing it with a recording, diving into a polyphonic mix first-hand. Later I dissect an arrangement of JB, repeating the first phrase over and over again as they listen for one instrument at a time and finally the whole as a sum of the parts. Listening in 3-D I call it. And they get it, and are proud to have done so.
What an array of music you teach…must be fun!

It is– the joy of the classroom stuff makes the rest of the job bearable.
