Celebrating a Year

A farewell party for my son, and I’ve invited all the local friend-family that has supported him since he was born. I cook all day making his favorite foods, because he is leaving and I won’t be able to do it again for a long time. And they come, people dear to my heart, important to his growing. Some of these people I see all the time, some have spun out into different spheres. But like family, our ties are permanent, the truth of our friendships unaffected by passing time. And so we talk and eat and drink and laugh until well after midnight, marveling as we recall stories from our shared past. I can tell my son feels their support, our community, their pride in his transit, and how part of them is with him always. He has emailed me one of the family slides he is scanning, a picture of him and his sister, age >2 and 5+ in Germany. I show it to everyone at one point or another in the evening and their reaction, as they remember him then, is a poignant reminder of how intertwined our lives have been, how our tragedies and joys have fused us, unveiled our worst and best, and supported and enriched our lives.
