Celebrating a Year

A day of fixed obsession, working out the puzzle of the music arrangement defying my efforts to make it conform to what I hear in my mind. Arranging for a mixed group– including brass, woodwinds, violin, percussion, piano– involves so many decisions about who should play what when. And then there are the questions of clef, and transposition, playable range, and volume differentials. This is a really big step from arranging for mandolin family and guitar. The end seems to be in sight as I stagger toward midnight, at least for a first version. But this bowl of oranges is pretty much all I see today besides music notes on my computer screen.

    • I wouldn’t trade it, but it does have its terrifically busy spots.

    • Always hard to be over-busy. But easier when there are worthwhile reasons.
